TRACEY REVENSON, PhD

LAB DIRECTOR

TRACEY A. REVENSON, PhD is Professor of Psychology at Hunter College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, and a faculty member in the Health Psychology & Clinical Science training area at the Graduate Center of the City University. She received a B.A. from Yale University in theatre and psychology, a Ph.D. in psychology from New York University, and postdoctoral training in social ecology at the University of California, Irvine.

Trained as one of the first generation of health psychologists, Dr. Revenson brings a social-ecological perspective to the study of how stress and coping processes affect psychological adjustment to chronic physical illness, and how these processes are influenced by the social context. Her research on coping processes among individuals, couples, and families facing serious physical illnesses such as rheumatoid arthritis and cancer as well as the influence of gender and race/ethnicity on psychosocial adaptation.

In addition to numerous chapters and articles, Dr. Revenson is the co-author or co-editor of 13 volumes, including the Handbook of Health Psychology (2019), the Cambridge Handbook of Psychology, Health & Medicine, (2019), the APA Handbook of Health Psychology, vol. 3: Health Psychology & Public Health (2024, forthcoming), Caregiving in the Illness Context, and Couples Coping with Stress. She also co-wrote Becoming a Health Psychologist (2020), a guide for getting into graduate school in health psychology.

Dr. Revenson is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Behavioral Medicine and the US delegate to the European Health Psychology Society. She served as elected President of the Society for Health Psychology of the American Psychological Association in 2005.

​

In 2013, Dr. Revenson was awarded the Nathan Perry Award for Career Contributions to Health Psychology from the Society of Health Psychology, APA.

​

In 2019, she received the Award for Excellence in Mentoring from the Society for Health Psychology, (Division 38 of the American Psychological Association).

​

In 2020, she received the Distinguished Mentor Award from the Society for Behavioral Medicine.

​

She is an elected fellow of the:

Annals of Behavioral Medicine, the Society of Behavioral Medicine's flagship journal, publishes original empirical articles on behavioral medicine and the integration of biological, psychosocial, and behavioral factors and principles. ABM's 2018 Impact Factor is 3.575 with a ranking of 17/137 in the category Psychology, Multidisciplinary. The journal's Five Year Impact Factor is 4.906. Impact Factor information is published in the Journal Citation Reports (Web of Science Group, 2019).

The Society of Behavioral Medicine is a multidisciplinary organization of clinicians, educators, and scientists dedicated to promoting the study of the interactions of behavior with biology and the environment, and then applying that knowledge to improve the health and well-being of individuals, families, communities, and populations.
